Pinus parviflora 'Miyajima'

35.00

This species has been highly prized in Japan for well over four hundred years to create magnificent pine bonsai and exciting plantings in the landscape. Thriving in regions of Hiroshima prefecture at altitudes of 1000 to over 5000 feet, Miyajima will not do well in areas of extreme high humidity and scorching summer temperatures. Slightly curved 1-2" needles in clusters of five are 3-sided displaying a blue-green outer surface and 2 silver-colored inner surfaces giving the tree an overall blue appearance. Branches are ascending when young and later more horizontal with added age and weight. This conical-to-round crowned pine can easily grow to a height of 40' left on its own in increments of 4-10” annually and will probably reach 4' high and 2' wide in 10 years. This abundant cone-producing pine with lots of viable seeds allows one to propagate and offer starters to admirers and collectors. Miyajima responds very well to pruning so building and shaping artistic forms for the landscape is always a rewarding adventure! Full sun to keep compact. Zone 5
